Torso of a Young Athlete
Bronze on Honduran Mahogany
22H x 8W x 6D
This piece of sculpture is homage to the ancient Greek and Hellenistic bronze sculptures that were recently on display at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The show consisted of thirty-five bronze sculptures that survived by being buried in ancient ruins or sunk to the bottom of the Aegean Sea. In that show, there were numerous standing torsos that captivated my imagination. One in particular was ghostly hollow and standing in stillness.
I had already been drawing my favorite male model, who happens to look like a Greek Kourous figure as it is, when he struck this reaching pose. I instantly came up with the idea for combining these concepts and the results is, Torso of a Young Athlete. This piece is part of a new bronze series that will be produced in short editions.
